CANTERBURY.
(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")
CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
The list of Canterbury candidates for Parliament has undergone a few minor alterations. Mr. C. Opies has announced himself in the Government interest for Courtenay, and Mr. J. Ivess has come out in tbe same interest for Selwyn. Mr. G. Witty, who is opposing Mr. Russell for Riccarton, says that he is a Government man and not an Oppositionist; but it is significant that he is the nominee of the Farmers' Union. Mr. Jacques has definitely decided not to contest Lyttelton, and Mr. J. Studholme, jun., and Mr. Scaly are contemplating a descent,on the Ashburton constituency. Mr. Studholm, who is an Oppositionist, will have the support of the Farmers' Union if he stands, and Mr. Willis will probably retire in his favour. The campaign in Lyttelton was opened on
Monday by Mr. Rolljtt. and Mr. Tvess made his first appearance before the Courtenay electors 'cm Thursday night. So far the only electorate that has been really worked is Hurunui. Mr. Meredith is down with influenza, and has been obliged to postpone the opening of his campaign for a few days. No move has yet beet, made by any of the city candidates. LATER. Since my former telegram there have been several fresh developments in the election campaign. Mr Opie has retired from the Courtenay contest, to avoid splitting the Liberal vote, and Mr A. Hassan is out for Kaiapoi in the Government interest. Mr R. M. Taylor has decided to re-enter the political arena as a candidate for Christchurch.
