STORMY WEATHER.
The heavy weather of Saturday and Sunday culminated yesterday in a gale of exceptional severity, which did considerable damage in the harbour, and detained several coasting' vessels in port.
The steamer Stella, berthed at the western side of the Railway Wharf, was placed in sonic danger by the wind suddenly veering round to the south-east. During a sudden squal! a wire hawser forward parted, and shortly afterwards a chain cable aft also went, allowing the vessel to turn completely round in her berth at tha wharf.
A small fishing- boat, owned by Ml Patterson, of Devonport, was moored off the Calliope Dock, when the moorings gave way and the boat went ashore, being- completely smashed up.
Reports from country districts show that the rough weaher has been rather wide spread. At the Thames heavy rain set i-n and flooded the Kaueranga River, Tararu Creek, and all the smaller creeks. All the lowlying land at Parawai w^as under water, and some damage was done to the traffic bridge over the Tararu Creek. At Waihi a strong easterly gale was raging yesterday, accompanied by heavy rain. At Ohinemuri the weather had been squally for some days and culminated on Sunday in a strong north-east gale with heavy rain. Yesterday the country was covered with- some depth of surface water, and at noon a flood seemed imminent, as the gale raged with unabated fury and the water channels were unable to carry away -the water.' Some of the dwellings were inundated, and the occupiers were compelled to leave their homes. It is reported from Gisborne thai the s.s. Waihora experienced very heavy weather to the East Cape,, and the voyage to Gisborne from Auckland occupied nearly 31 hours. The Omapere also arrived last evening after a hard week along the coast. The majority of her cargo from Auckland was carried on. and will be discharged at Napier when the steamer goes to Westport for coal.
