BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH.
' The corrected returns for this Borough was 1056.
. The sub-enumerator for Papakura ,adds: "I can only account for the de'"createe. by wage "earners having to leave the'homes of their parents to get y. employment in other localities, and Slsb 6wing to a small portion of the district being added on to the Humia Eoad District. ; The reason given for the decrease by the sub-enumerator at Bombay is that people with large families have holdings not large enough to maintain them all, and as land is available in the district they have to go elsewhere to make homes for themselves. Another cause is that alt the empty houses, besides three or four others which have ■ Veen taken down, had occupants last census, the holding having since been purchased or leased by adjoining neighbours. The roll number of Bombay sohool in 1596 was between 130 and 140, whereas now it is only 80. Otahuhu shows an increase of 103, but the Howick returns disclose a decrease of 96. Maungatawhiri also %Bhows a falling off of 98. Waiuku, on 'the other hand, shows an increase of 11?,. while the population of Papakura is 25 less thaln it was in.lS96, Pukekohe 62 lesrff ancl Awitu 4 less. The .islands of the Gulf saved the position, &he population having increased from 61.6 to 803 since the census of 1596.
