ONEHUNGA.
A large crowd gathered in front of the Borough Council Chambers at Onehunga to-day, in order to hear the Eoyal proclamation read. His Worship the Mayor, Dr. W. 11. Close-Er-son, said:
We are met together to-day to listen to a proclamation read which for a past generation Providence has prevented us requiring to our nation. It may seem a strange anachronism that the Supreme Killer, in his great wisdom, has so willed it that in the time of the greatest and deepest sorrow he mitigates the severity of the blow by giving a source .of joy and thankfulness as a consolation. So it is to-day that we mourn and ever will mourn the loss of our beloved Sovereign, Queen Victoria. Still our sorrow is tempered with joy at this moment that our beloved Prince and Princess of Wales have been spared to a nation, and are at this very moment being proclaimed at Westminster Abbey King and Queen of Great Britain and Greater Britain, and Emperor and Empress of India. The proclamation was then read, and the whole of the assemblage sang
the first part of the National Anthem, "God Save the King." Three hearty cheers were given, after which Canon Haseldeu engaged m prayer, and the assemblage dispersed.
