HAMILTON.

The concert given in the Wesleyan Church last evening (Tuesday) in aid ot the funds of the church was well attended notwithstanding the wretched state of weather. The sacred programme presented was a highly pleasing one. and, although encores were not allowed, expressions of applause were loud and frequent. Items were rendered by Mr Gleeson, of I-luntly, Mr J. Tidd, Miss C. Meachem. Rev. M. Cook (Huntly), Mrs Qualtrough, Rev. H. J. Blamires, 'Miss Scorgle, The Rev. Blamires and Mr Meachem sang the duet "David and Goliath," and the church choir rendered several anthems. An efficient orchestra assisted greatly towards the success of the entertainment. At the Magistrate's • Court, Hamilton, on Wednesday morning, before Mr 11. W. Northcroft, S.M., George Annett, of Hamilton East, was charged, on tho information of H. E. Trestram, with having, on Sunday, 26th August, used provoking language with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. A second charge against Annett that ho did at the same time and place make use of obscene language was withdrawn. Mr Swarbrick appeared for informant, and Mr W. F. Buckland for the defendant, who pleaded guilty. His Worship commented strongly on the case and inflicted a fine of £5, with £3 costs. It is understood that the three retiring Councillors (Messrs H. Trestram, R. F. Sandes and S. Davis) will offer themselves for re-election to the Hamilton Borough Council, and that Messrs J. S. Bond, A. E, Manning and E. J. Davey will contest the seats in the interests of The Ratepayers' Association. Since this was written the whole of the gentlemen named have been nominated. The Court was occupied to a late hour last night hearing a case, Soper v. Thomas, claim £195 for damage done by a fire lit by defendant. Liability was admitted, and £25 paid into Court. Lengthy evidence was heard. Judgment was given for plaintiff, for the amount paid into Court, and for defendant for costs £17 8/.
