LECTURE ON MUSIC.

On Thursday evening at the School of Music. Grafton Road, Mr W: H. Webbe delivered the fifth of the present series of fortnightly "Talks to Musical , Students." The subject Was "The* Art of Practising," and although the lecture lasted for one hour the students were kept thoroughly interested from b.glhnlhg to finish. Mr Webbe took as a text "-What, When and How," explaining the absolute necessity to obtain satisfactory results to know what to play, when to play, and how to play. He then pointed out the many requirements to be considered in connection with the subject of practice, such as industry, method, regularity, concentration, a thorough technical school, enthusiasm, good health, good* music, a good teacher,- a good piano. At the conclusion of the lecture, as an exemplification Of* the re-f suit Of good practice, two of the junior pupils played from memory on two plarioS Raff's very effective and somewhat difficult "Tyroltenne Waltz." The number of students attending these lectures is gradually on the Increase. CHESS.

■The handicap tourney in Connection with the Hamilton Chess Club was con*cluded last Wednesday evening, when Mr G. Rolllnsoh won the final game and the tourney. The handicap, has been In progress three' months and has proved most interesting, the many closely contested games amply justifying the work of the handicappe.;..
