SINGLE TAX LEAGUE.
At the Talloresses' Hall on Friday Mr Gerald Peacocke gave an address on "Free Trade and the Labour Party." Mr Wesley Spragg presided, and there was a fair attendance. Mr Peacocke said the main argument now used in favour of protection was the encouragement of infant Industries, but experience showed that the time never came for getting, rid df such protection, and that It always resulted In the creation of monopoly and privilege. Mr Peacocke.was heartily applauded on resuming his seat, and the following resolution was carried after a brisk discussion; "That this League congratulates the Premier on the reduction of taxation on the necessaries of life, and urges him to resist all attempts to prevent such reduction; but inasmuch as the increased prosperity thus secured' will certainly be discounted by a corresponding Increase in , land value this League desires to point out the necessity of Increasing the taxation on land values by one penny in the £ and abolishing the present exemption."
