FUMIGATION OF STEAMERS.
(By Telegmph.-Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day
The Government is devoting careful attention to the question of fumigating the holds of ships with carbonic acid gas, but at present some seriou* difficulties present themselves, as the gas ascends and does not descend, it would, of course, be necessary, if fumigating was to be effectual, to start the i_ro_ess from the lowest hold, which would necessitate the removal of cargo where it is tightly stowed, a very difficult, if not well TiifV impossible, task while a steamer lies in the stream. However, the Health Department is vigilant and energetic, and it nuay be depended upon to dlo its best to preserve the public safety.
