QUARANTINE.

I (To the Editor.) ! Sir,—Now that the plague scare is lin our city can you kindly inform myself and the public at large how it is that three large steamers should be in I quarantine without anyone in authority being on board to see the regulations are carried out. By enquiries I find in other countries Customs or other officials are always placed on board, and are roost particular that the regulations are strictly adhered to. I quite fail to see how the caretaker on Motuihi can stop fishing and other boats going along side at night in the hope of doing a little smuggling, and if there is any disease on board spreading it all over the place. Who is to blame for this state of things? If it is our Government, then the sooner this is pointed out to them and rectified the better.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.

(To the Editor.) j Sir, —It has been reported in the j columns of your paper that an official from the Auckland Post Office had ' | been dispatched to the Quarantine Sta- ! tion for the purpose of having the inward Australian mails fumigated. As one of some experience in postal matters, permit me to point out that every bag should be opened, including all enclosures of mail from Australian ports to places beyond New Zealand. I would like to know if this system has been carried out respecting the mails per Mararoa, which arrived today. Having collected from my private box this evening my letters and papers I made a careful examination of them, but could find no trace of any smell of disinfectants. I therefore fear that a proper system of fumigation could not have taken place.—l am, etc., CAUTION.
