NUISANCES, ETC.
(To tUe Editor.) ! Sir,—The refuse from the late fire |in Customs-street East should be ! speedily removed, as it must be, from jits nature, a ready draw for rats; and, ion an allotment (Railway), Breakwater Road, there is a lot of refuse. We want a destructor, but it appears as if saving of our pockets is of more consequence than saving the health and lives of ourselves and our children. On Sunday morning last engines were crcssing Breakwater Road about 12 noon without the usual bell-ringing. Is this quite wise? Accidents often happen when least expected. —I am, etc., PROGRESS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—The inspectors of nuisances pry into the condition of people's backyards, and rightly so; but have they no eyes for the nuisances on the public streets? I trust you will spare space to expose the nuisance existing along the Grey Lynn side of Ponsonby Road, especially near Pollen-st. and Richmond Boad. The horse j clung from the road lies in heaps all j along beside the gutter and in the jguitter, and after last night's shower jit emits an odour that canot tend to j the health of the people, while when iit was dry and the wind was blowing, as it was yesterday, this horse dung j was blown into all the shops, butchers [ and bakers, fruiterers and grocers j alike on both sides of the road to the ! great annoyance and also to the peril j ;of everybody, for no washing can | clear the food of the germs of disease |and the filth thus deposited on and inj it. Is it impossible to get such a nui- j sance abated? If so are the people j to submit quietly to be poisoned by the Grey Lynn Borough Council.— I am, etc., T. L. STEVENS. 37 Brown-st., Ponsonby, March 9, 1900.
