UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting of the University College Council was held yesterday afternoon in the Council's Room at the College. Present: Sir G. M. O'Rorke (Chairman), His Lordship the Primate (Dr. Cowie), Rev. W. J. -Williams, His Worship the Mayor (Mr D. Goldie), Messrs F. E. Baurae, C. T. Major, R. Hobbs, G. Peacocke and Dr. Maclaurin.
First Term.—Owing to the absence of two professors at the Senate session it was agreed to defer the opening of the first term until the. 12th of March, and to deduct the .week lost from the first vacation, thereby making up the full term. The term will end on May 19th. Lecture on Dentistry.—Air Phillip Moses wrote on .behalf of the dental students attending the College, asking that lectures be delivered on dentistry and other facilities afforded to students. Professor Thomas wrote reporting- on the letter, and said that Mr Moses' request meant the engagement of a specialist, which was impossible, but that valuable practical instruction, could be obtained in the laboratories. It was decided to reply to Mr Moses tothat effect.
Professor Talbot Tubbs — The Chairman mentioned that Professor Talbot Tubbs had gone to Melbourne, with his permission, to do some research work for the public library. The Council approved and granted the Professor a week's leave of absence if necessary. Examinations. A letter was read from the- Registrar, Wellington, re the advisability of forming regulations to govern the holding of examinations at outside places for exempt students. A motion by the Chairman that the Council do not examine anyone outside the boundary of the Auckland province was rejected. Government Subsidy to College. — The Chairman submitted to the Council a careful and elaborate memorandum which he had drawn up for presentation to the Government re the wants of the College. It pointed out that though the Council was diffident in approaching the Government for a subsidy, so soon after obtaining a grant of £ 1000, yet the Council wished to point out that it was obliged to carry on the College on £4000 a year, about one half of what Canterbury and Otago spent on their colleges. The Council wished for an additional £1000 a year to pay lecturers now unpaid, and to equip "laboratories and provide scholarships. The Council also respectfully wished the Government to take steps to establish a Chair of Agriculture, both theoretical and practical, at Auckland. The Chairman was thanked by the Council for his trouble in drawing up the memorandum, and was authorised to take steps io brjng it under the notice of Ministers.
Leave of Absence. —Leave of absence was granted to Mr Jackson Palmer, M.H.R., and the Hon. J. A. Tole. Finance.—Accounts to the amount of £ 3G5 6/2 were passed for payment* The. Council then adjourned till the last Monday in March.
