Captain Johnson, •' late of the 80th Regiment, writes; —"Once more' let me suggest through your widely circulated paper that pur contingent, now nbout to proceed to the seat of Avar, shall be clothed in a material suit obi c to the .climatic conditions that will have tp be endured when eampaig-ni ng on thelhigh veldt, whether on the uplands .of Natal and the old colony, or on. the more elevated plateau of the Free State and Transvaal. Those who arrange these matters may as well take the tip from one who has been under canvas on the high veldt, that the cold during- the period of April to October is, when nt ah elevation "of anything over 3000 I feet; and; be it remembered that i Johannesburg stands 5000 feet above I sea level —is, before, the sun is well above the horizon, most intense., and that the nights are frigid'enough to i freeze water placed in a tent.
