AUCKLAND CITY.
PROBABLE RESULT OF THE SCRUTING POLLING PRACTICALLY UNALTERED. : The scrutiny of the votes cast at the City polling booths has occupied a long1 time. Mr John King1 and his assistants -worked till midnight on Sunday. Official details cannot- yet toe obtained, but. it is understood that not quite .100 duplicate votes were discovered. The scrutineers resumed at 10,30 o'clock this morning, and worked until 1 p.m., when an adjournment was made for one hour, the scrutiny being resumed at 2 p.m. The seamens and commercial travellers votes were gone through by the Returning Officer. So far as can at present be judged there does not appear any prospect of the position of the three candidates who head the list, Messrs Napier, Fowlds and Crowther being affected by the scrutiny, though Mr Hobbs' totals have been increased. About 40 persons assisted the Returning Officer in going through all the voting papei-s, and at the close of the work. Mr Geo. .T. Garland, seruitineer for Mr R. Hobbs, handed to Mr John King the fpllowing document:— "I on behalf of the sciuitineers of the various candidate, assembled at the Drill Shed, do hereby for myself and the remaining scrutineers, at the. end of the scrutiny ot the votes, certify that everything in connection with this serut'iny as with the conduct of the election generally, has been carried out strictly in accordance with kuv and with absolute impartiality." At ii.lt) o'clock the scrutiny ended, resulting as follows:— W. J. Napier 6097, a gain of < by I the scrutiny. 1 G. Fowlds :">:)95, nine votes less. AY.
