| .__ v What might have proved a disastrous 1 fire was promptly checked on Satur- \ ! day night shortly before ten o'clock, i Mr J. Farrell, a member of the Grey ! I Lynn Council, who lives in Rose Road, \ I noticing there was a lot of smoke ; about went out to ascertain the cause j ; and found that it Came from a two- ' ! storied house occupied by Mr J. l j Graham, boot manufacturer.' He at once ran down to the house and found Mr Hoddnott, who lives near by, just arriving on the scene. By this time : volumes of smoke were issuing from the house, and as there was no one jat home Mr Farrell promptly got j through a window, while Mr Hoddnott | ran to the wash-house and brought j some water, entering by the back door. I ! Fortunately, Mr J. Macdermott (for | fifteen years a member of the Anck- | la.nd Fire Brigade) was passing, and he I also entered the house and rendered valuable assistance. The seat of the fire prpved to be in a closet under ! the staircase, which was half full of i shavings and leather clippings, no ; doubt stored there for the purpose of I kindling the household fires. Mr McDermott went to the upper landing of | I the stnrica.se, and others who had ! arrived formed a bucket brigade by i means of which the fire was ultimately | stopped, but not before the wall paper 'in the hall and ceiling of the kitchen had been scorched. Meanwhile, a Mr j Carroll ran to the Fire Brigade Station 1 and rang the bell with the result that i two members of the Grey Lynn Brigi ade promptly turned out with the : hose reel, but it was not found necesj snry to lay oiit n lead, a? by this time the bucket brigade under Mr Macj dermott had. pretty well put an end jto all danger, but the firemen rendered igood service in seeing that everything i was thoroughly nuenoehd. Captain Fenton and also Captain Field, of the Salvage Corps arrived later on in cabs, they having been attending a meeting of fire brigade officers, from which they were summoned by telephone.
