At the usual weekly meeting of the Pitfc-street Literary and Debating Society held on Friday evening short'speeches were given by several of the members. Mr Shackleford spoke on the " North Island Main Trunk Kailway," Mr Scott on "Speakers and Speaking/ Mr Lawrenson on " The Shortcomings of the Poet Kipling," Mr Sopwith on " Francisco Pizarro," and'Mr A. Peak on "Secrets of Success in Business." Miss Creak rendered a recitation. Just arrived : Beautiful tapestry carpet ; squares, large assortment, in all designs and colours, bed-rock price, 27s each. — Tonson Garlick Co. (Limited.)—(Adrt.)
