WEST END ROWING CLUB
The" final trial fours of the West End Rowing Club for this season were held on Saturday afternoon, the first prizes being gold medals presented by Mr M. McLean, President of the Club, and the second prizes, gold-centred silver medals presented by Mr T. U. Wells. A large number of spectators were present and were served Avith afternoon tea and refreshments. Thirteen crews were engaged. The various gig races in the first round were won by ' crews stroked by Oswald, Hewson, Hales and Gannon. The final race between these crews was won by Oswald's crew by a bare length, after an exciting race, Gannon's crew being second. The winning crew were: E. .Oswald (stroke), A. W. Graham (3), J. A.. Potts (2), H. D. Tovey (1), and S. George (cox). The second crew consisted of L. Gannon (stroke), F. M. Shortt (3), A. Stephenson (2), G. M. Main (1), anclE. Shoppard (cox). After the races were over trophies were presented to the winning crew, the second crew, and to various other members who had won races during the season. Mr Peacock presented the prizes.
The North Shore Sailing Club held a very successful picnic at Drunken Bay on Saturday afternoon, numerous yachts with their crews and large numbers of visitors putting in an appearance at the Bay. The commodore of the fleet, Mr Alex.'Alison, preceded the fleet in the steam launch Beatrice. The p.s. Britannia also took a number ol picnickers down to the Bay, and a concert was held on board her in the evening, concluding at about ten o'clock, and the picnickers returned to the North Shore after a very pleasing outing. On Saturday afternoon a pulltng boat race was held in the harbour, in four-oared watermen's boats, between the employees of two local plumbing firms—Messrs F. W. Fowler Bros, and Mi' R. Tudehope. The course was from the telegraph pole, Shelly Beach Road, to the end of the Queenstreet Wharf. Mr G, Fowler acted as starter and Mr S. McDermott as judge. Tudehope's crew won by two boats' length. The winning crew were: B. Crawford (stroke), McKellar (I), Hammerton (2), Osborne (3), Watson (cox). It is proposed to make this race an annual contest.
A yacht race took place in theManukau Harbour on Saturday afternoon under the Manukau Yacht Club's auspices, between Mr C. Schnauer's Beile and Mr C. White's Tui, for £1 a-side. The course was about 15 miles. A sweepstake was got up, in which Mr J. Jell's Myrtle competed with the other two yachts, and both prizes were sailed for conjointly. The boats finished: Belle (scratch), 1 ; Tui(4min), 2; Myrtle (20min), 3. In the evening the club held a smoke concert at Mr Dunn's Manukau Hotel.
