DEATH OF MR MASKELL.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day-

Mr W. M". Maskell, Registrar of the University Senate, who has been ailing for some time, and who, a few weeks ago, underwent an operation, died last night; aged 58.

[The life of Mr Maskeil has been a more varied one than falls to the lot of most. His education was carried on at the Roman Catholic College of St. Mary Oscott, and in Paris. On leaving school he went into the 11th Infantry (now called the Devonshire Regiment), and there he served three Years. Subsequent to coming to New Zealand in 1860, he farmed in Marlborough and North Canterbury, and from 1865 to 1575 he sat as a member of the Canterbury Provincial Council, assuming in 1874 the position of provincial secretary and treasurer. When the Provincial Councils were abolished Mr Maskeil was appointed Registrar of the New Zealand University, and this position he held up to the time of his death. Since ISB4 deceased resided in Wellington. As as entomologist Mr Maskeil has done a great deal to increase the stock of knowledge about* our New Zealand insects, and his researches into pests affecting the agriculturalists have been of considerable value to the farming class. His death at the comparatively early age of 58 will be very widely regretted ]
