SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
Some women say that a man attempted to set fire to a store at Brooklyn on Saturday night. They ga^e the alarm and the fire was put out, but the man was not caught. The labour people who were thrown out by the wet weather on Labour Day hold their annual demonstration to-morrow, including renewal of fche procession, which was the best ever seen, and contained several exhibits upon which much pains and time were bestowed.
On Saturday night Routh's printing establishment in Featherston-street suffered damage, by fire to the extent of about £30 and stock to a similar extent.
Another fire caused the almost total destruction of Cable's old flourmill, in Manners-street, owned by Mr T. J. MacCarthy, and which was uninsured. Mr William Wilson, first mayor of Christchurch, a very old settler in Canterbury, died this morning, aged 78. Dairy people are up in arms against the exclusion of their produce from the lonic, which left for London on Saturday. A number of them held a meeting at the Carterton Show and passed a resolution drawing attention to their treatment and asking the Government to assist the dairy companies in future shipment. The last policeman engaged inquiring into the Satherley case has now returned to Wellington. Nothing fresh has been discovered, and it is now considered doubtful whether the real truth will ever be known.
