KUAOTUNU
KUAOTUNU, November 3.
Mr and Mrs Cowan, of the Kuaotunu Hotel, started out on horseback yesterday (Tuesday) for Mercury Bay. On arriving at what is known as Brown's Creek, on the beach, and which has to be crossed, they found the tide was up and started to swim their horses. Mr Cowan led the way and had proceeded a short distance when, on looking round, he saw his wife sinking in the stream. He with some difficulty got her ashore, where he secured the friendly attentions of a family near by for the lady. After a change of attire and an hour or two's rest, Mrs Cowan was able to return home. She was suffering a good deal from the shock, but was otherwise little the worse for her unpleasant misadventure. Had she been alone at the time of the accident Mrs Cowan must have been drowned, as when her husband saw her she had already sunk twice out of the fabled thrice. A musical treat was enjoyed by a good andience on Saturday night last, the occasion being that of Miss Celia Dampier's concert. All our local talent was represented, and in addition a visitor from Te Aroha, Mr Sampson, appeared. One and all acquitted themselves well. Needless to say Miss Dampier took the audience by storm, her playing in particular of Tour's '•Seconde Romance" and of "Yankee Doodle" proving masterpieces of bowing. The little artiste visits Whitianga od Friday next. The approaching departure or Mr and Mrs Truscott, which is announced, is an exigency much to be regretted. The lady has during her residence here been as much appreciated as she has been generous in her efforts for the delectation of concertgoers. Mr Greenwood is still at Cowan's Hotel, where he is slowly approaching convalescence. Mrs Peterson, whose severe illness I have recorded, is happily out of danger.
