THE NEW ZEALAND CUP.
Everything now points that the field for the New Zealand Cup will not be a large one this year and that it will be an easy race to win if the horse is a good stayer. It appears to me that Euroclydon can be left out of calculation and I shall be surprised if he sees the post. Daystar was never in better health than at present, and lie is one whom I have thought all along would make a bold bid for victory. I maytell my readers that he is not a good track horse. Another Aucklander with a capital «hance is St. Paul, and if I only thought that lie could run out the two miles strongly from end to end, he would be my straight out selection. He is such a'fine free galloper that he is at least bound to make a good showing, and that was a capital lit of form on his part when the donkey licked Antares in the Avonfole Cup. It has been hinted that Waiubi was tried over two miles and found wanting, but I give the statement 'or what it is worth. At any rate, he is Much easier in the market, and in his case ft would have been more satisfactory from * public point of view if he had been seen «ut at the Wanganui Spring Meeting. ■However, I hear that he arrived at Riccar*on on Thursday, and we will now learn how le is sliaping in his work before finally summing up Ms chance. On tjie score of "height Skirmisher is well used; but he has so frequently proved himself a rogue when ra-ping that I don't care to trnst him for this race; One of my first selections was wra Rossyln, who was a winner in the Kensington Handicap (1| mile) at the Dun««n Hunt Club Meeting a few weeks kick, when he carried Bst 81b to the front the good time of 2min 9|sec. This sen 01 at. Glair and Lady Emma has improved f' er since and the advices concerning him Horn the Forbury are of a nattering «iaracter. His dam Lady Emma was the *st of stayers, and Lord Kosslyn showed £? could get a journey in the last Dunedin op, which he won, easily compassing the 2 mue in 3min llsec. Cannonshot showed winning form at the North Otago this week, annexing a six furlong jace. His chance is highly thought of by ijf oWner. but the horse's "performances in «« past do not point to his being able to ™ a New Zealand Cup. However he messes a nice weight, and boasts of a 100H g p^igree- Epaulet cannot be overt» i *s SomS well on the training Jt*» and he has been supported from the Jg&t quarter. I like him best of the three horses. At this stage it ap-
pears to me that the winner will come from Lord Rosslyn, Daystar, St. Paul and Epaulet.
