THE WANGANUI DERBY.

As anticipated, Daunt proved equal to winning the Wanganui Derby for the Hon. J. D. Ormond on Thursday last. The telegraphed account of the race goes to show that the winner made quite an exhibition of St. Conon, who on this running can have no chance of winning the New Zealand Cup. The time the race was run in/viz., 2min 47secs, was very slow, and does not compare with that of St. Paul last year, who covered the journey in 2min4l 3-ssec, the fastest yet recorded for the race. However, Daunt is proving himself a useful sort. As a two year-old he annexed the Sapling Stakes at the Napier Park Spring Meeting, and he also got home in the Russley Plate at the Canterbury Autumn, and ran second to Multiform for the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes. This season he is running consistently. Daunt was sired by the defunct Dreadnought. Thursday's victory makes the second time the Hon. J. D. Ormond has been successful in the Wanganui Derby, his previous win being achieved by the aid of Queen of Trumps in the year 1891. The Club having determined to do away with the race, the Hawke's Bay sportsman will thus lay claim to having won the last Blue Riband run on the pretty West Coast racecourse.
