THE SUGAR DUTY.
PROPOSED TAX ON BEET SUGAR
(By Telegraph —Oavu Correspondent)
Wellington, this day. The Government have received an application from the bead office of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company at Sydney asking that a special duty of £2 per'ton in excess of that levied on cane sugar should be imposed on beet sugar imported into the colony, as has been clone in Victoria for several years. The Company claim that every ton of beet sugar imported displaces as much locally refined sugar, and as the cash expenditure in the colony for each ton of refined sugar, omitting the cost of imported goods used, is nearly £2 per ton, including the cost of distribution from Auckland to southern ports, Avhere beet sugar is landed from ocean steamers, there is adirect loss in money and means of employment in Ncav Zealand. The matter is under consideration of the Government, but it is improbable that the decision of Cabinet Avill be made public before the delivery of the financial statement, in Avhich the matter Avill be referred to.
