ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDINGLEASEHOLD LANDS.
At a social evening with the loading residents of.Mercury Bay lasb week the Hon. A. J. Cadman, Minister of Minea, said he had now groat trouble in dealing with the mining qugsstion in general, and especially with, regard to mining on the Sauri Timber Company's property, on which quostion there was evidently a great fflisunderstandiisg. The Kauri Timber Company wanted a bigger say regarding Tairua Uian the Government would allow. In the past the timber industry had boen of '« greater itnportauco in thi9 district than we mining -industry, in connection with tna formar, dams were erected and boom? constructed in t.he various creeks, and now objection was raiaed to the granting of water rights in these creeks for mining purposes, . There waß friction, assd ib was we duty of the Governmenh to see fair Pay, so that the community might reap the benefit. The company had no right to mine on these leasehold blocks any more than anyone else, unless granted permission by fche Warden, so thab this should make them anxious to settle tnatber9. If, however, the company did nob come to terms it would be necessary to introduce legislation to sebtla the matter next session.
