AN EXCITING INCIDENT.
Wellington, Wednesday. On the passage of tho Takapuna from New Plymouth to Wellington ab about 11 o'clock last nighb, the officer on the watch observed a green light some distance ahead. JChia was midway between Stephen's Island and the Brothers. The steamer's coarse was altered sufficiently to avoid a collision, bnb those on board her were somewhat surprised bo observe a barque, as it proved to be, suddenly veer round, bringing round her red lighb towards 'the steamer's star' board, and hove-to aba distance ot 400 yards. From the number of lights displayed on the sailing vessel ib was apparenb that those on hoard had the idea thab the steamer was running into them, and their subsequent action .was equally surprising to thd Takapuna people. The weather at the time was slightly hazy, with rain.
