WELLINGTON NOTES.

(BY TELEGRAPH. -*-OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, this day. RECIPROCITY WITH CANADA.

The Govern men b, in replying to representations of the Canadian Government, respecting reciprocal tariff rates in relation bo several articles imported by New Zealand from Canada, and articles imported by Canada from 'New Zealand, have assured the Canadian Government thab the question will be dealt with when the revision of the tariff is under consideration, but as the law at present stands ib does not permit differential rates. The total expenditure authorised- for public works an the recenb Cabinet meeting, amounts to £18,609. Other votes agreed to by Cabinet are : Mimi Road, £300 ; Waimoro-Easb Coast Road, £1,150; road from Kanieri Falls to Kanieri Lake, £700 ; East Road (Taranaki), £529 ; addition to Courthouse (Hawera), £1,083 : equipment of Hydes' .Station (Otago Central line), £1,000. The •' Times" this morning says the Hon. Jno. McKenzie's behaviour at Pomahaka the other day,, falsified the dismal predictions of objectors to the Lands for Settlement Acb t'hab the possession of votes by settlers placed on the land would etFectually prevent economic success of bhe purchases. Insbead of a plianb political tool, the Pomahaka settlers found a man with backbone who insists on strict fidelity to obligations under taken. The M inisber is enbibled to the thanks of every independent minded man in the colony for tho firm stand he has taken in this matter. Tho ridicule hisopponenta subject him to for that firmness, proves that bheir original objection bo tho principle of the Lands for Settlement Acb was nothing bub a political chum.
