The MinUter for Education desires to devise means for facilitating the work of University students wbo are non-residents of the collegiate districts of Auckland, Chriatohuroh, and Dunedin. I understand that the present annual college examination is compulsory, and thab personal attendance at lectures is necessary to ensure success for the average youth, lb is the desire of the Ministerts relax these trammels in suchwise that students living outside the limits of the collegiate districts may treat the college examinations as optional, the degree examinations remaining, of course, compulsory. The Minister has formally placed bis suggestion before Dr. Hector, as Chancellor of the University, who has responded by stating that the Senate will ! give the whole subject) mott careful consideration. A HOSPITAL DIFFICULTY SETTLED. Dr. McGregor has returned from Greymouth, where' he effected a satisfactory settlement of bhe difficulty that had amen between the District Hospital and Charitable Aid Trustees and the Minister. LAND AND LABOUR BILLS, The Minister for Lands has, I believe, given the finishing touches to bis Land Bill, and tbe labour measures are ready, THE FOX INQUIRY. Mr O'Hara Smith has returned from his Auckland inquiry, and bis labours are said to be almost ended. The "Post" has stated that Colonel Fox declined to draw his salary inasmuch as be is without employment, and I am able to confirm this,
