ONEHUNGA DRAINAGE.
POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS.
W. J. Beat," proprietor of the Terminus Hotel, and W. Dunwoodie, manufacturer, were charged at tho Onehunga Police Conrfe yesterday afternoon with allowing offensive liquid to flow from their premises into the street drain (which is an open one). Mr Brookfield, for Mr Bray, admitted that water did run across the footpath, bub ib waa not of an offensive nature. Mr Dunwoodie denied that anything bub clear water, used for household purposes, was allowed to flow across the pathway. Sergeant Greene said the present charge was one brought forward in order to direct public attention to the unsanitary state of the borough. There had been a number of j cases (15) of typhoid fever reported, one of which had proved fatal, 'and no doubt now these cases were brought forward the Council might be prompted to take some nbeps to abate the nuisance by providing bucq by-laws aa would effectually deal with similar cases. Evidence as to the offensive nature of the refuse water was given by Sergt. Greene and Constable Tapp. Mr Brooklield contended thab ib was the duty of the Borough Council to make proper drainage, for ib was often a difficulty for tenanta to find an outlet for surplus water. His Worohip eaid he wiahed ib clearly understood that people could nob. be allowed to throw offensive matter into a streeb. He would dismiss these cases, being the tirst) brought before him, bub in future, he would deal severely with any similar, case, bub he hoped the Council would do something in the matter. The Mayor (Mrs Yates) who was in Court, ro3e and said, "That there was, in her opinion, no necessity for a drainage systom, if people would only exercise a little care, and ib was utterly impossible, in the presenb financial state of the Borough, to carry oub a system r»f drainage."
