A GOOD WORD FOR TASMAN.
(To the Sporting Editor.) Sip,—ln "Hippona's" notes on his travel through Mount Wellington Park Stud Farm (Mr Thos. Morrin's famous breeding establishment), he regretted Lady Walmsley was in foal to Tasman. Now, as a supporter of old Tasman, one of Now Zealand's greatest turf heroes, at seeing this I was touched in a very tender spot, as I took your meaning that Tasman was not worthy of such a matron as Lady Walmsley. On the contrary, I think if Tasman was given a fair chance he would make a name"as great as mosb of our sires, as in the pasb you will find ho has been confined to Mr D. O'Brien's few matrons, and, with bbc exception of one of tbem, they have produced racehorses equal to mosb New Zealand cracks. Tasman was a great performer, mosb will admit, and many of his wins were made under nothing bub greab gameness, and, if I am right, his record was nob broken until a few days back, when Merganser cub oub the mile and ahalf in 2min 35f.ee, thus beating Tasman's bime by Jsec. This will show you that he was not on the slow side. Another thing in his favour—he retired after all his many races as sound as the first day he sported silk. I feel sure if Mr O'Brien sees your note on the abovo it will touch him very deeply to think you hold a regret at his old favourite having a chanc9 to make a name for himself among our many sires.—l am, etc Give Him a Chance.
