The Avondale Jockey Club bring off their Autumn Meeting on Saturday nextGood acceptances have been received for the various events, and tbe result should

he good racing. The Workman was brought back irotn Wellington on Monday last by Harry Harrison. Major George was a passenger by the same steamer. In a short chat 1 bad with him yesterday he told me that the correct time for the Challenge Stakes was lmin 15i.=c-c, and for tbe Great Autumn Handicap won by Merganser 2min _-i?e_. Major George disputes both official times and save several expert timeist. at Riccarton agree with him that tha races were not ran in the time published and officially given out. , Major George's mare Fiesole is in foal to Nelson this season. His other five marea are also in foal to tho erst racecourse crack, viz., Sister Agnes, Vendetta, Tho Maid, Memphis, and Florence. The colt foal out of Tenambra (full brother to Pegasus), and the filly foal out of Tree Deuce have been brought up on cow's milk. It will be re,m_mbered"tbafc both Tenambra and Tres ' Deuce died Inst season. The Auckland Racing Club, I regret to say, mado a loss over the recent Autumn Meeting. Hurricane, the winner of the April Handicap Trot ab Potter's Paddock on Saturday last, was originally brought from Christchurch to Napier, then to Gisborne, and afterwards to Auckland. He took parb in the first Trotting Cup of 200sovs,_ in which the disqualified Brandy finished first. In this event Hurricane had 25sec start, and was well supported. On Saturday last he had 53sec. However, the horse, previous to Saturday did no better on our local tracks than getting a place, and I don't think Mr Halstead could have given the horse less. The faultless way Hurricane trotted en Saturday was a, theme of admiration. The much-talked of maro, Black Oats, got no nearer than third, bub she is one I should say capable of winning a good race. Peter, an aged gelding, hailing from Taranaki, ridden by J. J. Russell, was served up a warm first favourite, but he failed to even get into a place, and finished last bub one. The meeting was noticeable for tbe non-success of the Greenwood stable in tbe pony events, but thoy annexed tho Electric Trot by the aid ot Mount, who, with 21sec, ■beat a good field. Mr Blorafield and staff worked the totalisafcors satisfactorily, and Mr Mark performed the secretarial duties well.

The Oxford (Waikato) races were held on Saturday lasb. Tho various eyents resulted .- — Maiden Plato : Malvolio, 1 ; Maori Girl, 2; Dora, 3. Firsb Handicap Hurdles: Selwyn, 1; Witch Hazel, 2; Paddy, 3. Oxford Cup: La Grippe, 1 ; Minnie, 2. Maori Race: Maori Girl, 1; Moneahoe, 2 ; Countess, ?>. Second Handicap Hurdles : Selwyn, 1 ; Paddy, 2, Railway Plate: Minnie, 1; Viceroy, 2. Pretender also started, being hot favourite but Jell.

Mr E. V. Halstead has so far recovered from his attack of illness that he was able to be presenb for a time at tho Auckland Trotting Club Meeting at Potter's Paddock on Saturday afternoon last.

From last week's issue of the " Canterbury Times" I clip a tabulabed lisb of winning bwo-ycar-olds in Now Zealand this 3eason, at tho samo bime adding the two wins to Westmere's credit, which he gained ab the Wellington Meeting. Tho season, a3 far a. two-year-old racing is concerned, has almost como bo an end, bub it must nob bo forgotten thab at the Autumn Meeting of the Ashburton Racine Club next month tho Ashburton Stakes for two and three-year-olds, and the Nursery Handicap for horses of a similar ago will be decided. However, the positions of tho principal winners will not, in all probability be altered. Ab presenb Loyalty is at the head of affairs with the sum of _1.17_2 to his credit, and as Strowan (£1205) and Eve (£357), aro not likely to race asain this season, the position of the..on of St. George and Fair Neli is well assured. Both Strowan and Eve have well earned the respective amounts againsb their names, but one of tho latter', ten victories was a walk Over. Tho list is as under :—

The Dunedin Jockey Club has determined to join the Canterbury Jockey Club in demanding that tho State tax upon the machine shall in future be paid by the Racing Clubs, and nob by investors.

Nathan's horse Satyr is reported to be again in strong work at Randwick, and has recently been exercised over burdles.

Mr W. Douglas will send a team of jumpers, which will include Gouranto and Waterbnry, to Australia shortly. G. Hope will accompany ehe horses. At a recent meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the Secretary reported that the sum of £341 waa in arrears in connection with the First Challenge Stakes. It was resolved by the Committee to notify those owners liable, and to take proceedings for the recovery of the forfeits, according to the Eules of "Racing. T. Sheenan, the Christchurch trainer, has taken in hand Mr P. Campbell's yearling colt Strathbraan, by Apremont—Engagement.

The programme for the C..J.C. Grand National Steeplechase Meeting has been decided upon. Tho amount to be given away in stakes aa compared with last year is increased by aboub £100. The meeting is fixed for August 10th and 12th. Mr D. O'Brien i_ now riding the 'chaser Freeman in hia work at Riccart'on.

Wellington does not supply a single nomination for the New Zealand Cup this year. It is stated bhab one firm of Christchurch bookmakers losb £450 over Merganser in the C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap. The Canterbury " Times " has a loading article deploring the scarcity of good steeplechase horses in Canterbury. The writer adds:—" The Canterbury Club has done everything in its power to raise steeplechasing to its proper standard without much -iicce..."

In discussing tho nominations for the next New Zealand Cup, "Spectator" remarks :—" Altogether the field on paper looks aboub the mosb formidable thab the Canterbury Jockey Club have ever had to submit to their handicapper for treatment, and there has already been somo speculation as to what weight Mr Henry will commence with. He has certainly a basic before him thab seems to present many difficulties, for St. Hippo, Merganser and Stepniak are a trio that ab onco require some thinking over. The problem is this : Stepniak beat St. Hippo easily over a mile and a-half course at level weights, St. Hippo beat Merg.inser giving her 9!b very easily over two miles, and Merganser has quite as easily defeated Stepniak over a mile and abalf giving him 91b. When St. Hippo won the Auckland Cup at Ellerslie he put up a record for one of his age carrying so much weight, and when Merganser won the Autumn Handicap at Riccarton she broughb off a performance nover heard of south of the line. Ib will be interesting indeed to note how Mr Henry will place the trio mentioned, leb alone other candidates.
