THE KAKANUI INQUIRY.
FINDING OF THE COURT.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Dunedin, this day. The Court, of Inquiry into the Kakanu 1 disaster has concluded. The Court find that the steamer was caught in a terrible gale on January 4th, which seems to have partaken of tho nature of a cyclone, and as she has been neither seen nor heard of since, in all probability the steamer foundered during that gale. It was a fate that might have happened a vessel of any size. The evidence shows clearly that the men and women at McQuarrie's Island on arrival of the Kakanui, were not in destitute condition or suffering want of food, and never had been. The men undoubtedly suffered hardship for want of proper food, but were never in absolute want. The fear of danger that doubtless prompted the benevolent act of sending the Kakanui gave them rolief. The Court endorses with full confidence Mr Belcher's opinion as to the way the vessel was lost.
