SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.

THE CANDIDATES NOMINATED. INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO VOTE

The following nominations have been received for the various School Committees in the Auckland educational district. Seven members are required for each Committee, and where tho nominations are in excess of thab number an election will take place ab the annuul meetings of householders to be held on Monday evening next, the 27th insb.

Auckland City.—The candidates nominated are : J. Blades, R. Farrell, Dr. Walker, Wm. J. Speight, M. Browne, P. Crowe, A. E. Glover, M. H. Hamilton, W. H. Worth. T. Tudehopo, C. A. Collins, and T. Foley. Only three-of the out-going Committee aro nominated, and of the remaining candidates tho last-named five are understood to be nominees of the labour party. A hard fight is anticipated.

Ponsonby. —The candidates nominated are confined to members of the outgoing Committee, and being exactly the number required they will be declared duly elected on Monday evening next, viz. : Arthur J. Blomtield, Alborfc Devoio, Wm. Thome, Alfred O. Knight, Wm. Leys, George Plummet-. There will, therefore, be no contest in Ponsonby district.

' Newton.—The following are the names of the candidates nominatod for the Newton Schools Committee : —James Aggers, John Turner, Thomas Preston, John Drummond Gow, George Knight, James Morley White, James Curtis Skeen, Henry Thompson, Thomas McMaster, Kenneth Boyd, William Lawry Harding, Ernest Eugster, Thomas Prosser (senior), William Service, John ' Trenwith, Joseph Thomas Bright Dines, Robert Miles, William James Macdermobfc. Tho ballot box will be placed in St. George's Hall, Greab North Road, the place of election, during the day on Monday, nexb, April 27th, until 7.30 p.m., the hour appointed for the annual meeting to be held, which takes place in that hall.

Devonport.—The following persons have been nominated : Roy. Joseph Bates, Rev. Jas. Hill, Messrs O. Mays, E. Bartley, H. J. Le Bailly, Jno. Bennett, G. L. Peacocke, E. F. Tizard, Wm. Wilkinson and P. H. Mason. The election takes place on Monday evening nexb at the district school at 7.30. For the convenience of those who cannot attend the meeting a ballot box has been placed in the schoolroom, in which householders may record their votes.

Takapuna.—Jno. A. McKay, J. Budgo, Robert Johnston, T. W. Seaman, E. D. Meabyard, ,las. Campbell, Georgo Boyde, Jas Ansenne, Edwin Harrow, J. M. Donaldson, C. S. S. George, Jno. Douglas. Twelve candidates having been nominated, a ballot will be taken to select seven.

MOUNT Eden. — Eight candidates were nominated in this district, viz. : Shirley W. Hill, William Gray, Ernest S. Medley, William Bnrnaby, Samuel Gray, William Cola, W. H. Cooper, R. B. Nesbitt.

Onehunga. — Eleven candidates were nominated, viz. : Revs. Mulgan, Rishworth, Miller, Dr. Erson, Messrs Robb, Adam, Tapp, Jess, (.Tillman (junior), Laking, and Norris.

Otahuhu. —The following eight candidates havo been nominated :— Messrs Robert Dick, William Sellers Day, Phillip Warren, Thomas Johnston, John Todd, Owen Curran McGee, Thomas Augustine Brown, Herbert Syms. An election for seven will thai of ore take place on Monday next.

Newmarket. — The following candidates have beon nominated : —George Carson, George Kent, John Lumpkin, John Mclntyre Jackson, Nathaniel Randell, Walter Wesley Why man, and James Wilson. There being only the required number (7), there will bo no election. There will bo a meeting of householders at 8 p.m. on Monday.

Parnell. —The following twelve candidates have been nominated :—Joseph Armitage, John H. Field, junr., Angus Campbell, Isaac Hill, Henry Schofield, Joseph Smith, Charles H. Smith, Charles Kay, E. Hodgson, Arthur Smith, Caleb Wood, W. C. Speight, junr. Seven members only being required, a ballot will he taken on Monday next for the selection of that number.

Grafton,— Eight candidates have been nominated, and seven being required, a selection by ballot - ill be made from tho following :—Messrs J. W.Boone, Good, J. Hewson, J. Young, S. Clarke, C. Layer, Court, and Bridgewater. With the exception of Mr Clarke, all the candidates nominated are members of the present Committee.

INSTRUCTIONS TO HOUSEHOLDERS

The election will take place under the School Committees Election Act, 1890, by which the cumulative vote was dono away with, and many other improvements effected on the old Acb. Householder means and includes every adult male or female person who (being ownor, lessee, or tennnt) resides in any dwelling-house within the school district, and the parent or guardian, or other person who has tho actual custody of any child attending any State school within such district.

Nominations of candidates received in writing by the Chairmen of School Committees prior to to-day have to bedisplayed on the outer door of every schoolhouse within the district on the third Tuesday in April (to-day). On the 27th inst., when the annual meetings of householder- take place, if seven householders and no nfore have been nominated in writing, they shall be declared to be duly elected : if moro than the required number have been nominated, a ballot shall bo taken, and the seven candidates receiving tho highest number of votes declared elected.

Should the number of candidates nominated be less than seven, the candidates nominated shall be declared duly elected, and the meetiua- shall proceed to nominate end elect by ballot other candidates to provide the requisite number of seven. Every householder may exercise as many votes as there are persons required to be elected, or any less number of votes, but no householder shall be entitled to record more than one vote for any one candidate —the cumulative v&te being hereby abolished. . ~ ,-.-,. In all school districts situated within boroughs, ballot boxes have _to be provided in an accessible position at the school - room on the day of election from 9 a.m. till the hour fixed for the election, and householders may deposit therein voting papers signed and attested by a Justice of the Peace, a postmaster, or a State schoolmaster. In school districts nob situated within the bounds of any borough any householder may send to the Chairman of the School Committee nob laber bhan 4 p.m. on the day appointed tor the election, enclosed in an envelope, marked outside " Ballot for School Committee election," a voting paper containing the name or names of condidates nominated, signed and attested by a Justice of the Peace, a Postmaster, or a State schoolmaster. These latter provisions will, no doubt, be largely taken advantage of by householders who are unable to attend the meetings.
