TEMPERANCE RECEPTION.
Tiieke was an informal meeting of bho representatives of the various temperance organisations in tho city at the V.M.C.A, Rooms last evening, to accord a welcome to Miss Ackermann. This lady in tho world's mis.-ionary from tho American National Women's Christian Temperance Union, and tho Independent Order of Good Templars. There was a large attendance, the majority being ladies, and Sir Win. Fox presided. Tho Chairman in a brief speech introduced Miss Ackcrmann and referred, in doiiur so, to tho excellent temperance work boiiifx done in the United States, The lady on coming forward was greeted with loud applause, for which she returned her thanks, stating that she bnro greetings to tho colonies from tho greatest temperance organisation, the American National W.C.T.U., which was over 300,000 strong, and also from tho . Independent Order. of Hood Templars, with which sho had been connected from her childhood. She gave a Lief but forcible review of tho temperance work in the States, whioh she declared was mainly in bho hands of tho women. Reference was made to tha speaking of women in public, which somo people considered immodest, bub she held that no woman lost womanly modesty by speaking in the name of God on behalf of humanity, home and country, During her speech she spoke in high terms of Mrs Leavitb, her predecessor, She concludod with an earnest appeal for all present to give their active co-operation in the temperance cause, Mesdames Best and Main then welcomed Miss Aokermann. to Auckland on behalf of the local W.C.T.U, Mr Jago, P,G,W.C,T, of the Good Templar order, gave Miss Aokermann a warm invitation to the South when her wcrk in Auckland should bo over, Thore were many ladies there who would extend a warm welcome to her, Messrs J. T. GarlJek (President Gospel Temperance Mission), T, W- Glover (United Kingdom Alliance), and C. Hill (Band of Hope Union, and Auckland Total Abstinence Society), also tendered greetings from their respective organisations. This afternoon ab 3 o'clock Miss Ackermann addressed the Aucklond W.C.T.U. at fcho Y.M.GA. Rooms. On Thursday she is to address a meeting of ladies at the Tabernacle, and on Friday evening she is to lecture in the ball of the Y.M.O.A.
