ALL ABOUT A FERRET.
A PKCULIAR caso occurred last night about 9 o'clock in Karan;;aliaie (load. A rcripcc-table-looking young man named Arthur Vicary accosted Constable Finnerlv and asked him to enrac with him to tho shop of Mr Samuel Tilly, cs ho had got a ferret belonging to him. Finnerty told liim that was a civil matter, ami merely walked as far as the door of tho shop, Yicary walked inside and asked to bo shown a ferret, and Mr Till}' handed ono our of a box. Mr Vicary throw down linlf-a-crown on the counter, and paying, "That's for ito" keep,'" made oil with the fejrefc. Finnerty shouted out for him to bring bach the ferret, but Vicary dod^eil in amongst tlio crowd. Tho constable seeing a horse handy, galloped oil after the man with i ho ferret, und succeeded in overtaking him by the Masonic Hall, flc was taken back to the shop, Mr Tilly said that the ferret was his property. Yicary was placed in the lockup. This morning ho was charged nt the Police Court, before Dr. Giles, It.M., with having stolen the ferret, to which charge he pleaded not guilty. Inspector Broham paid that he would ask to withdraw the case, as there appeared to liavo been no felonious intent, Ho was instructed that tho accused had lost <i ferret at Motutapu about a month ago. Subsequently the prosecutor was at the island and ho caught a ferret, which tho accused thought to bo his property, but which he was instructed was not the same one. Instead of inquiring into the matter he appeared to think all ho had to do to was tj secure possession of tho ferret.
His Worship granted tho application, saying that it was tho wiser course under tho circumstances.
