NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of tho above body wa! held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr W. Morgan), Crs. Bishop, Hogg, Whyman, Holmes, Kent, and Lowe.
Correspondence. —The letters received were read and dealt with as follows:—From Mr Jag. Pirie, Returning Olflecr, reporting that no nominations had been received for the vacancies in the Council. Ho had accordingly proceeded to a fresh election. The letter was received.— From F..). Moss, M.H.R., Wellington, stating that he had seen the Hon. Minister for Public Works regarding the Railway gates, who stated that at present he has no money available for the work, but hopes soon to have, wh»n he will undertake to put up Iho gates. The l-jlter was received. From F. Ji Moss, enclosing copy of tho Epsom and Mount Kdcn Recreation and Gravel Pit Reserve, and asking. " Will the vestins; in a few Koad Boards for their exclusive use of the land dealt with in the enclosed Bill at all atl'ect Newmarket in obtaining gravel, or in any other way { The Bill lms passed its second reading to-day, and will come on next Thursday. If theru bo any objection, telegraph to me." The clerk said he had consulted the Mayor and telegraphed to Mr Moss on the ruattor, asking that Newmarket be included in tho schedule with tho other Boards.—From the Parnell Boroußh Council, forwarding the following resolution nasaed by the Council :— "That, provided the Borough Council of Newmarket will keep the Park Road and footpath in repair, and that all balances of accounts (up to the Ist January last) bo cancelled, the Parnell Borough Council wilt keep the portion of Manukau Road that is divided between Parnell and Newmarket Boroughs in repair."—lt was agreed to send a letter to the ell'cct of the agreement ontercd into, that each Council should keep its own footpath in repair, whichever road might bo selected. Nuisanck.—The foreman of works reported that Mrs Judd had asked him to report a nuisance on her property.-On the motion of Cr. Whyminit was resolved that tho lady bo informed that the Council could notdo tho work.
STKKKTH Committeb.—Mr Holmes said the work had been done in Morrow - street as ordered, and suggested that the extra 60 feet should also been done, and moved that tho Committee have power to make arrangements accordingly, tho cost not to exceed £3. This was agreed to. ANNttAi, Accounts.-The annual accounts for the year ending March 31st, were laid on tho table. The genera! account showed—assets, £632 Os 3d; liabilities, £638 12s. Water supply account: Credit, £61 17s 3d; debit, £169 2s 3d. Interest and sinking fund account: Credit, £346 8s 6d ; debit, £35 7s 6d. Water loan account: Credit, £112 11s 3d; debit, £15 10s lid. Reserves, nil. Public debt: .Debenture water loan, £4,000. Inspector ov NuisANCK3.-On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved that Mr Bruce be relieved of the duties of Inspector of Nuisances, and Mr James Wilson appointed to that position. It was explained that no reflection was cast on Mr Bruce; it merely meant that it took him all his time to attend to the roads. Pkice ck VVatkk and Gas.—Tho Mayor moved, "That the Town Clerk write to the Auckland Council, asking for a reduction of the price of water."—Mr Kent seconded the motion, and it was carried.—l ho Mayor moved al-o, "That the Clerk write to the Gas Company, asking for a reduction in the price of gas for lighting the borough."—Mr Hogif seconded the motion, which was carried.-The Mayor said thut the present coat was mcra than the borough could bear.
