CIiItiSTCItUKCH, this day. The first sonior football matches of tho season were played on Saturday unde r unfavourable circumstances, the heavy rain giving tho ground a thorough soaking and making the ball so greasy tha it was difficult to hold. Merivale defeated Christchurch by a try to nil. East Christchurch beat newly formed Canterbury College Club by four points to nil. At Rangiora, North Canterbury wet.t down before Sydenham by eight points to one pom t. LYTTELTON ORPHANAGE.
Tho Lyttelton Orphanage Committee have requested master and matron to resign. The reasons for stop havo not been made public, the committee saying that bheir mouths are closed till their action has been reported to the Charitable Aid Board.
