SALE OF WORK AND CHRISTMAS TREE.
At 2 o'clock this afternoon a Christmas Tree and sale of fancy work commenced in the Foresters' Hall, Karangahape Road. The affair was under the auspices of the Ladies' Sewing Circle connected with St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, Surrey Hills. The proceeds of the sale are to be devoted to the building fund of the Church. At one side of the hall are a couple of tables laden with all sorts of fancy work, which isoffered forsaleatreasonable prices. On the opposite side of the room are stalls of pot-plants, most of which are in bloom. Amongst these are some tine specimens of the cactus tribe. In front of the platform is tho Christmas Tree, which is laden with a great variety of useful, ornamental, and amusing articles and toys wherewith to delight the youthful mind. The tree is a good specimen of the cypress tribe, and reaches nearly to the ceiling, while its branches are covered with the mostnatural productions in the place of seed. The wants of the inner man have also been provided for in the shape ot a refreshment stall. At 2 o'clock the sale was formally opened. It will continue in operation to? night, to-morrow afternoon and evening. The Christmas Tree does nob commence to shed its fruit till 7 o'clock, when a perfect harvest may be anticipated. Prices of admission are, adults Is and children half price. Each ticket guarantees a prize.
The acceptance for the Amateur Athletic Sports on Saturday were received last night by the Hon. Secretai'y Mr H. H. Hayr when only two cried off. H. Davy was scratched for all engagements while Murphy decided not to go for the 600 yds. There arrived by the Waihora from South yesterday Mr A. T. Baird, a member of the Christchurch 8.C., and as a visitor ho is to be allowed to start in two of the races of the Waitemata B.C. on Saturday, in the Lady's Bracelet (2 miles) in which ho gets 90 yards handicap and in the 1 - mile safety in which race he is in the same mark as A. Buchanan* with 40 yards. Mr Baird was provided with a machine this morning by the W.8.C., and had a spin round Northcote, and this afternoon was busy doing the lions of the city.
