The Mata Gold Discovery.
FOUR PENNYWEIGHTS TO THE DISH.
. Mata Creek, where Messrs Birch and Baker made an important gold discovery about 3 weeks ago, is three miles north of Tapu Creek, on the dividing range between the Waikawau and Mata Creeks. They have now driven 40 feet on the leader and sunk a winze, and from this latter working they have obtained their best prospects. The average size of the leader is six inches of brown cement and quartz. Gold is shown freely, and there are splendid dish prospects. About three weeks ago, four pennyweights of gold were washed from one dish of " casing ,! in the presence of Mr Moore, manager of the Cambria, and Mr Kelly. Several other claims have been pegged out, and about 30 men are employed. Messrs Davis and Hughes, who hold the ground adjoining the prospector's claim, are reported to be on cood gold, but are keeping quiet about it until they get their title from the Warder.
