(BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

j Wellington, this day. Inspector Shearman, who is shortly to take charge of Auckland police district, is pi-obably the oldest police officer in the Australasian colonies, having been in the service ever since 184S, when he joined the mounted force of South Australia. He afterwards entered the Victorian force, and rose to the position of Senior Sub-Inspector of one of the divisions of Melbourne City and of the Water Police. In 1862 he received an appointment under the Canterbury Provincial Government to organise the force of that district, and after completing his arrangements there he organised the Westland police. Some years afterward he was appointed by the General Governmentto the post of Inspecting Superintendent for the whole colony, and when increasing population necessitated making fresh arrangements, he was given the supervision of the North Island as well as Nelson and Marlborough. When another division of the district took place in 1877 Mr Shearman become Superintendent of the Wellington district, where he has remained ever since.
