SIR GEO. S. WHITMORE AND ONEHUNGA VOLUNTEERS.
Tiik Onohunga Naval Artillery, commanded by Captain Hulse, and tho Rifle Corps under Captain Lundon, assembled a fall muster in the goods shed, on Saturday evening last. After a preliminary squad drill, the companies, in open order, were inspected by Col. tho Hon. Sir G. S. Whitmore, accompanied by Major Shepherd, Adjutant. Colonel Whitmore expressed himself surprised and gratified at the large muster of the two companies, and stated that he was not asking too much when he said that ho should expect that by November the men would be sufficiently well drilled to enable them to creditably perform the most difficult manoeuvres of the review to bo held on the Prince of Wales' Birthday. After tho inspection, Colonel Whitmoro and Major Shophord ware invited by Captain Lundon to meet the officers and non-commissioned otHcora of both companies at a dinner provided at the Torminus Hotel. To the well-known hospitality of the Misses Lundon another testimony was added by the olegant and substantial repast which was served under their affable supervision. The chair was taken by Captain Lundon, supported on tho right by Colonel Whitmore, and on the left by Major Shepherd. The vicechair was occupied by Captain Hulse. After doing justice to the magnificent spread, " The Queen" was proposed with honours. In a neat and happy speech, Captain Lundon proposed •' Our Hon. Visitors," coupled with tho name of Major Shepherd. Suitable replies having been made, three cheers were given for "Our Visitors," and Colonel Whitmore and Major Shepherd then loft for Auckland. A short meoting was afterwards hold to consider the means of erecting a drill-shod. Mr M. H. Roe, in response to a general call, very deservedly earned tho thanks of nil by his hearty and substantial sympathy with the Volunteer movemont, find by his consenting to aid in tho eroction of the drill-shed. After toasts to Captains Hulse and London and our hostesses wore drank, a very enjoyable ovoning terminated.
