The race meeting annually held by tho Takapuna Jockey Club to commemorate Queen's Birthday is taking place on their course at tho North Shore to-day. Considering the very threatening appearance of the weather during the morning, and the counter attractions of the Volunteer review and coursing match at Papatoetoe, there is a good attendance of spectators, and on the grand stand there is a fair sprinkling of ladies. The heavy rain that fell yesterday and early this morning has made the course and its surroundings very floppy, consequently pedestrian" are having a rather uncomfortable timo of it undor foot. The racing track is also heavy and greasy, Borne parts of it being absolutely dangerous to both horse and rider. Mr Hunter's band is present, and is rendering choico selections of music, which helps to pleasantly while away the time between the different races. The first race was eet down for decision at twelve oclock, but owing to a number of tho horses from Auckland having mißsed the special steamer laid on for their conveyance, it was fully a quarter to one before the nrat event started.
