Newton.

Tho annual meeting of hous iholdere was hold in tho Nowton Kaat Schoolroom last evening, there being 70 householders present. Mr J. French was voted to the chair. Tho annual report of the Committee titatod that the now master of Newton East School had fully answered the expectations formed regarding him, and they woro in every way satisfied with his manner of conducting the school. Tho Board had leased the Primitive Methodist School-room, i'itt-Btrett, which was iißod for tho younger children. Tho number on tho roll for tho East School for the December quarter, 18S4, wa« 400 boys and 357 girls—7s7, with an average attendance of SSI. At tho examination hold in Decomber, 90 per cont. of thoso examined passed. At the examination fer tho Bawlings scholarships, three boys from this school wero 3rd, 4th, and sth respectively. Mr 11. Mason still conducted tho Newton West School, and the Committee were well satisfied. The nu-über on the roll was 213 boys, and IS9 girla-412, with an average attendance of 335. At the September examination 80 per oent. cf those examined passed. The total number on rolls of both schools was 1,109, with an average attendance of 910. The Committoo drew attention to the want of increased school accommodation. — The following gentlemen were nominated members of the now Committee: — Messrs J. B. Moll, W. Sargeson, J. C. Wilkos, .T. Warren, MoDormott, J. Jamicson, T. Hobeon, and F. Joune. A poll was taken with the following result, tho first seven being declared elected :—J. B. Mell, 58 ; McDermott, 40 ; J. Warren, 45 ; J. C. Wilkos, 41 ; W. Sargeson, 20 ; J, Jumieson, 20 ;F, Hobson, 16; F. Jouue, 12.
