ENGLAND BUYS THE TURKISH FLEET.
LONDON, December 19. The British Cabinet met to-day. It is understood that England has arranged for the purchase of the Turkish fleet. BRITISH ARMY TO BE INCREASED. The " Standard " states that the Ministry will propose an increase of the army. Other Conservative journals state that German support to Russia is the real danger to British interests. The detectives, Meiklejohn, Druscovitch, and Palmer, and the solicitor Froggart, have been found guilty of complicity in the great turf frauds, and have been sentenced each to tAvo years' imprisonment. Inspector Clarke Avas acquitted. The news of the discovery of a plot to assas_iiate the Emperor of Germany proves to be false. The A\diole thing A\ rasa hoax. There Avere a series of assaults last Aveek on the Russian line from Pyrgos, to preA^ent the detachment of troops to. assist in the siege of Plevna, and to assist Mehemet Ali's succouring the army. There has been a severe fighting on the LoAver Lorn. Pyrgos Avas stormed by the Turks. After an obstinate resistance, the stores burnt,and the magazines exploded, the Turks retired. The place has since remained quiet. SHIPPING DISASTERS. London, November 26. ReneAved gales have occurred, and numerous shipAvrecks have taken place.
