OHINEMURI.

(fROM our OWN CORRESPONDENT.) We are here like so many weather-glasses : our spirits go up and down without any visible cause, but generally owing to a hear-say report from Brown, Jones, or Robinson. There are many persons here who know, beyond doubt, that had Smith and Coleman received any protection from Government, they would ere this have shown a godd payable reef; but, owing to the Warden giving Thorpe and party the Prospector's Reserve without binding them within a certain time to produce payable gold (and in default to surrender the Reserve), obliged S. and Co. to amalgamate, for the simple reason that their reef might accidentally be discovered. They accordingly dtew Up an agreement,; which is supposed to be as follows :—" Thorpe and party bind themselves within a certain time to show gold. If they are lucky enough the whole party will have equal shares ; but if not, Smith and Coleman will demand the Prospector's Reserve, giving a guarantee, within twenty-four hours, to produce payable gold.' r It must be quite clear to everyohe that if Thdrpe find his party possessed the knowledge which entitleid them to the Reserve, they would before this have shewn the whereabouts. My firm opinion is, we are not out of the first muddle yet, and it is certainly a new feature in new goldfield operations to give a man or party a Prospector's Reserve without obliging him or them to show payable gold within a given time. It may be easily seen that Mackay has not been eonsulkd. Query—Why not ?
