Fatal Accident.
William Smith, one of the gang employed in ballasting on the Clutha line, was killed by a fall in of earth at Creytown. The deceased was a single man, and had no relations in the province.
Brewery Fire. The fire at Stratchan'a brewery originated in a mash-tub near the furnace, attributed to the spontaneous combustion of a quantity of patent malt, which was delivered late yesterday, and for convenience was placed In a yard near the furnace. The Royal and Standard had risks of £500 each on the building and stock. Ths actual damage is not ascertained.
Presbyterian Synod and Hymns. The Synod to-day rejected, ' as informal, the overture from the Dunedih Presbytery in favour of kymnology.
Branch Railways. The Government is being urged to expedite the contractors to finish the Awamoko branch railway in time for the next grain season. It was stated by the deputation to the Superintendent thai; the main line from Oamaru to Morakei could be opened in less than a month. Mr Me Andrew referred to the inability on the part of the contractors to get an engine for ballasting. It was finally ordered from home by the Provincial Government of great it weight than the rails; but it was intended to buy and use it. It is rumoured that the General Government intend to open a section of the Clutha line from the Chain hills to Tokomairiro in
March.
Representatives for Colonial Firing. The Volunteers are terribly disgusted at the postponement of the bteamer Wellington, by which they leave. Thej will only arrive one day before the shooting commences at the Thames.
Drowning in a Waterhole. A girl, named Meyers, aged three years, was drowned by falling into a waterhole at Whakaha.
Whalers' Report. The whaler ligado has arrived the Bluff, and reports that she is nineteen months out from Boston with 590 barrels of sperm oil. She reports speaking off Solander the Amerelane with 600 barrels, the Eliza Adam 1300 barrels, and the Matilda Sayers 80 barrels.
Mr Tumbull has been appointed Acting Resident Magistrate at InvercargilL Mr McCullough declined a testimonial which the inhabitants wished to give him.
Mr Leary has resigned the secretaryship of the Guardian.
The temporary Californian contract is for ■even months.
There will be no connection with Fiji. The only ports of call are Honolulu and Auckland.
