"THE VOLUNTEERS."
Tub usual weekly parade of the Auckland Ifaval Volunteers was hid last evening at the Drill-shed, Fort Britomart, when the prizes lately won at. the shooting were presented i y the Commandant, Captain Guildiug. Captain Tisdall, the adjutant of the forces, was pre sent. There was a very good attendance, but' few of the band were .present,, being at the entertainment at the Lunatic' Asylum. After the men had been put through the usual exercises, they were formed into three sides of a square _jmd tho prizes presented. They were as follows :" —A very valuable Spenser rifle, presented by J. T. Mackelvie, Esq., Private J. Coyle, who made the best score of 42 points; Private Martin, a revolver ; and Private Keefe, a silver watch. In presenting - the prizes the Commandant said that he hoped the men would be spurred on to -further exertions, and- continue to improve in rifle shooting. They were then briefly addressed by Major Tisdall, who congratulated them upon the good shooting which, they had made this year compared to that of last year, arid if they, only persevered he saw no reason why they should hot turn out some of the best shots in the colony. The use of the great guns was no doubt very desirable, but every member of the force ought to be able to'use the rifle in case of internal dissentions. No doubt when ih'e range-was tat Mount Eden— which he hoped would be he case during the ensuing summer—this, as .well as other corps, would turn out marksmen "who would be able to hold their own with the men of the South. Among-'those' who; he believed^.would obtain prizes upon the next occasion of prize firing would; be, Privates Keene and Marshall.— Capfain Guilding tli'ri proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Alackelvie tor the very hand'soiiieYprize'Awhich he had presented.—-ihe motion wa3 seconded by Lieut. NatU.n. — Three cheers were then given for Mr. Mackelvie and the donors of the other prizes, after which the proceedings concluded.
