FIRE AT AKAROA.
TWO-STOREYED BUILDING DES- ! TKOYED. : A lire (occurred in Jolie street South at about 6.30 p.m. on SatttrIi day when a two-storeyed building | belonging to Miss Eliza Kearney was I almost completely destroyed. The fire brigade, were quickly on the spot and although Ihe fire had started at the back of the building on the tipper storey and had a ,good hold it was kept in check. All the contents of the building except odd pieces of furniture which were salvaged was i destroyed and only the walls remained standing. Fortunately there was no wind and Mr T. Stewart's house, j which, is only separated a few feet j away was only scorched. The house [ was occupied by Messrs R, Bayley | and Jos. Giddens and their families j and. they lost practically everything. | The house was insured but the amount and the office in which it was insured was not ascertainable.
