Lord Cuvzon, the Viceroy of India has forwarded to the Imperial Government a strongly worded and emphatic protest against the burdening of India with a portion of the cost of maintaining a garrison at the Cape. The Sovereigns visited Cork, The King, replying to addresses of welcome, said the future of Ireland mainly depends upon the development of the spirit of industrial activity. Their Majesties, after visiting the Exhibition, returned to Queenstown and boarded the Royal Yacht and then sailed for Spithead at midnight.
Ten thousand spectators were present at the cricket match between Perthshire and Forfarshire, played at Perth. The stand collapsed, throwing 5000 people to the ground. Some fell thirty feet and one person was killed, while fifty were removed to the Infirmary, and 100 others received less serious injuries.
Some police have been arrested at Grangemouth, in Scotland, on charges of being implicated in systematic burglaries.

The Cardinals in Conclave celebrated Mass at half past six o'clock this morning
It is rumoured that the first ballot was informal. Eight candidates received substantial support, Cardinals Rampolla and Vanutelli heading the list, and Cardinals Dipietro and Capicalatro following after lunch.
A conference was held with the object of reaching agreement, but the second ballot Wftß practically the same as the first.
Cardinal Herrara kept to his bed while the voting was proceeding, and the infirmary employees fetched the voting papers from his celh Italian ..troops, lire posted in the vicinity of the Vatican to ensure the liberty of the deliberation. All food and communications are passed through four revolving trap doors, guarded by six officials, and all letters and newspapers passing in are scrutinized by the Censor, even chickens and fish are opened before being admitted. Teheran, August 2.
A critical situation exists in Persia owing to agitation by Mahommedan priests. A tribe has risen in revolt in the Shiraz district. Three thousand two hundred Babis have been oxpelled from Ispahan, owing to apprehensions of further trouble.
