BISHOP JULIUS' VISIT TO AKAROA.

On Saturday, Bishop Julius reached Akaroa, ooming aoross the harbour in Mr Milne's oil launch. He took the 11 o'clock service atSt. Peters on Sunday, preaoling to a very laige congregation on the blessing of a contented life and a self reliant nature. He dwelt at length on the way in which the 20th century men and women goes out ot the home oirole to find enjoyment, instead of finding any reaouroe in their own immediate aurroundings. At 3 o'olcck, the Bis* hop held a children's service, when he gave an address, taking as his text ''The ohildron gathered stioks," and showing how there are many little duties in life which nore but children can do, but which are nevertheless quite Indispensable to the complete happiness of a home. In the evening a confirmation service was held, and twelve candidates, four boys and eight girls were presented for confirmation. The church was filled, a number of the congregation taking seats in the gallery. The Bishop preached on the nefld of reserve force to meet the extraordinary trials of life. He instanced St. John and Bt. James as examples of men with a gigantic supply of mental strength ready to be used at any time when the occasion required, He considered the present age was peculiarly afflic'ed witn a hssitude attacking mind and body, and that this lassitude was in a great measure due to the lack of reserve force in the minds, bodies and souls of men. It was only by ostentation and display that attraction could be drawn, and the result was that everything in a man was plaoed as prominently forward as possible. What people needed to do was to acquire a hidden supply of strength, to talk less and think more ; so that when the hour of great trial came they had a fund of power upon which to draw. List night a social was held in the Oddfellows' Hall to welcome Bishop Julius.

Owing to the bad weather there was not the usual attendance at the social ; but a fairly large number of people were assembled together. After some good musical items refreshments were handed round, and when supper was concluded the Bishop gave what he called a chat, taking for his subject " A seaside resort 40 years ago and a modern seaside resort. In a few words he painted for his listeners the queer, cheery old village of 40 years ago and grand, if somewhat uncomfortable, watering place of to-dsy, and expressed a wish that Akaroa, with its lovely natural advantages would not be made an uncomfortable fashionable seaside resort. The Mayor moved a hearty vote of thauks to the Bishop which was carried by acclamation. His lordship returned thanks, and a pleasant evening concluded with the " National Anthem "
