CRICKET
STRONG VISITING TEAM A very strong canterbury cricket eleven, including the fast New Zealand bowler, J. A. Hayes, a member of the team which toured England last year, has been selected to play Ashburton at Ashburton on Labour Day. This will be Hayes’ first representative game since his arrival in Canterbury, and on a concrete wicket he should certainly be a strength to the visiting team. In addition to Hayes, the team includes J. G. Leggat as captain. Leggat, who has been an opening batsman in Canterbury Plunket Shield teams, wil} be remembered not only as captain' of the Canterbury colts’ team last season, but also for his instructive address to local cricket enthusiasts. Another member of the team, R. T. Dowker, has also been an opening batsman in the Shield team, while G. Anderson. M. P. O’Malley and W. Bell have also played Shield cricket. D. R. Farrant. who was the outstanding member of the Canterbury Brabin Shield team last year, has played in Ashburton on, several occasions. He is an Ashburton Rugby representative. The team is: L. G. Leggat'(capt), G. Anderson, N. Bennett, W. Bell, R. T. Dowker, D. R. Farrant. J. A. Hayes, J. Kiddey, L, Newman, D. B. O’Malley and M. P. O’Malley. The Brabin Shield junior team to play at Ashburton is as follows: G. Wainscott (capt), J. LeCompte, J. Houghton, O. A. Hutchinson, J. Bur rows, B. Howarth, M. Stewart, G. Brownlees, G. Johnston, K. McNicholl, J. Pugh, N. Jones (wicketkeeper). The following players will represent Ashburton against a Canterbury team on Labour Day at the Domain.— D. Smith (capt.), I. Griffiths, A. Burrows, D. O’Grady, H. Cullen, L. Moore, Ik McKay, L. Kerr, J. Harper, N. Bell, C. Keen.
