WAIMATE-CHRISTCHURCH EVENT

CYCLING

ASHBURTONi RIDER’S GOOD PERFORMANCE Another impressive performance was put up by W. Quay© in the Waimate to Christchurch road race on Saturday when he secured 10th place. He was the only local rider to complete the counse, and his progress in the race was eagerly listened for after his great ride in the Timaru to Christchurch race a week earlier, when he secured 12th place. Starting off the break mark of nine minutes, the bunch of seven riders had been whittled down to three at Ashburton, and from then on only two, namely W. Quay© and V. Hills (Auckland), carried on. / It’"seemed likely that the strong scratch bunch ipust catch these two men, but it was not the case. The two riders carried on strongly to finish ahead of the scratch men in 10th and 11th places respective-

ly. After the race when being congratulated by no less a person than Phil O’Shea, Quaye was told: “Don’t

start off the break mark again, a scratch man’s place is on scratch.” With the excitement of the big races over, local riders will now turn to local races, and with W. Quaye showing them that it is not the super cycle that wiDS races (his is a standard model), but plain grit and determination, we may well see some great races this season. The following is the programme up to Christmas. October 28, 16-mile Grove Farm block; November 4, visit to Methven for race; November 11, 18-mile Wakanui block; November 18, visit to Geraldine for race; November 25, 25-mile Allenton block; December 2, 26-mile Grove Farm block; December 9, 27mile Willowby block (Mullins Challenge Cup); December 16, 30-mile Wakanui block (Club Championship).
